What is Vedic Astrology?

What you Need to Know

Vedic Astrology refers to Indian or Hindu astrology, a system that originated in ancient India, and was documented by sages in the Vedic scriptures. Also known as "Jyotish" -- the science of light, Vedic astrology deals with astral light patterns that are thought to determine our destiny.

What is Astrology?
Astrology is the science of the effects of planetary movements on our lives. Astrology is based on astronomy, and astrologers need to know the correct positions of the planets at any given time, as well as the correct positions of the zodiacal fixed star signs in relation to any place on earth at any given time. Once the correct positions of the signs and planets are known, astrologers can construct charts representing these positions. And using his knowledge, the astrologer can study the charts and can make a wide range of conclusions about the moment the chart was cast for. Primarily, astrology is used to understand one's self, and our karma for this life.

Basic Principle
The basic premise of this astrology is that all things are linked. Your karma or fortune is determined by a predestined cosmic design. You are a soul incarnating in a body at a very specific time and place, and your life is a reflection of the greater whole into which you are born just as flowers bloom at certain times, say during spring time, when all conditions are perfectly congenial. So is the case with our births on this palnet.

What are Charts?
In Jyotish, the main item is your chart. It's a map of the planets in the signs of the zodiac. Charts are cast based on an exact moment at an exact place on earth. Therefore, the moment you were born and the place you were born has a chart, and that is your "birth chart" or "natal chart".

By reading the chart of the heavens for the time and place of your birth, claim astrologers, they can know much about you. The positions of the planets in the real star-based zodiac are taken and your "dashas" (predictive timeline) are arranged. Your Vedic chart will most likely reflect your real life and your dashas are probably operating the way they should. The Vedic astrologer looks at these planets, signs and house placements in your chart and can "see" your personality, as well as life events and possibilities - both the good and the bad times in your life. The dashas are then used to determine "when" the events will unfold in the life.

Its Predictive Magic
Dashas give a greater predictive accuracy to Vedic astrology than Western astrology. These "planetary ruling periods," which are unique to this system, give Vedic astrologers a tool for quite accurately predicting the trends, changes and events in your life with amazing precision. Therefore, Vedic astrologers are less limited to talking about your general overall self and can get more deeply into what's going to happen in your life.

How is it Different from Western Astrology?
Vedic astrology differs from Western or Tropical astrology mainly in that it uses the fixed zodiac as opposed to the moving zodiac. Because of the gradual tilting of the earth in space on its axis, the zodiac, if you calculate it from the sun's relationship to the earth, appears to be moving at the rate of a little less than 1/60th of a degree per year. Currently, the relative or movable zodiac is off or out of alignment with the fixed or real star-based zodiac by roughly 23 degrees, which is almost one whole sign of the zodiac. Because the two systems are skewed from each other by nearly one whole sign, most people's "Sun Sign", that which you can get from the newspaper each day, is usually one sign back when the chart is refigured using Vedic astrology. So, the first surprise of using the Vedic system is that you are no longer the Sun Sign you always thought you were. However, if you were born in the last 5 days or so of the Western sign month, then you will probably still be the same sign in the Vedic system.

Personal Experience
Vedic Astrology is one of the most interesting artifacts of intelligent life on earth. I mean, it's one of the greatest things we can share with each other. It's like understanding how the whole darn big picture is swirling in unison with the dance of life. What I'm saying is, "This system really works!" It's amazing! No wonder it comes from the books of the Vedic era. I've personally found no greater source of profound knowledge than Vedic literature.

Astrology Defined

There are as many definitions of astrology as there are astrologers out there. Here's an evolving collection from those in the field.

Nick Campion, from The Ultimate Astrologer: Astrology is the word of the stars - from the Greek astra (star) and logos (word). It is the study by which we read significance for our lives into the movements of the stars and planets.

Jessica Murray, from Soul-Sick Nation: The interplay of various planetary cycles has been found to have the qualities of a clock: an astoundingly intricate, mysteriously precise clock. Astrology has organized the workings of this clock into symbolic patterns, from which we can infer meanings about "what time it is."

Kevin Burk, from Understanding the Birth Chart: Astrology is the study of cycles. By observing the cyclical movements of the planets, we are able to gain a greater understanding of the cycles and patterns in our own lives.

Cafe Astrology: Astrology is, put simply, the study of the correlation between the astronomical positions of the planets and events on earth.

Musawa of Mother Tongue Ink: Astrology measures the cycles by relating the Sun, Moon and all other planets in our universe through the star signs (the zodiac), helping us to tell time in the larger cycles of the universe.

Fred Gettings, from The Arkana Dictionary of Astrology: The study of the relationship between the macrocosm and the microcosm, which (in materialistic terms) is often defined as the study of the influence of the celestial bodies on the Earth and its inhabitants.

Adrian Ross Duncan, from Astrology; Transformation and Empowerment: The basic principle of astrology is that the smallest thing in the universe is subject to the same process as the largest. The same rules apply for both, and indeed an action in one sphere will reflect an action in the other. Astrology is unique in that it applies rules of correspondence between time and space, linking them to human character and history.

Dane Rudhyar, on astrology: ...The first known attempt to discover a consistent and dependable order in existence produced the earliest and most basic forms of what is today called astrology. As such, astrology can truly be said to be the "mother of all sciences" and the original core of all culture and religions.

Vicki Noble, from Shakti Woman: Ancient astrology was body based and biological. In the beginning it was a felt experience, but after the beginnings of patriarchal civilization, it became a "science" in the more modern sense of the word. Ancient Civilizations and Astrology

There are clues hidden in the archaeological findings of pre-history that show that the heavens inspired and shaped the beliefs of the earliest civilizations. The first peoples saw that the Moon was linked to the tides and to women’s monthly cycles. Later they observed a belt of fixed stars (constellations), along with five prominent ones (planets) that had their own irregular movements.

Gradually, the early sky gazers noticed patterns, and began associating them with events happening around them. Creation myths often came from observing the sky and seasons, with important rituals timed against an astronomical calendar. At Machu Picchu in Peru, for example, an Inca ceremony took place during the winter solstice (June 21st in the Southern Hemisphere) to “tie the Sun” and keep it from moving too far north on its daily arc.

Planetary Alignments and Ancient Ruins

At Stonehenge in England (built in phases from around 3300 to 2000 BC), the Sun rises up over what’s known as the Heel Stone on Mid-Summer (early August) and sets on Mid-Winter (early February) on a point exactly across on the circle of great stones. The meaning of these alignments has been debated, but Stonehenge itself played a role in the science of astronomy, and is considered the first astronomical observatory.

At the Great Pyramids of Egypt (built 2600 BC), an astronomer discovered that a King’s burial chamber aligns with both the belt of Orion and Thuban, called the “Imperishable Star” by the ancient Egyptians. For the afterlife-minded Egyptians, these constellations gave the pharaoh two pathways of renewal and resurrection. The study of these types of planetary alignments is called archaeoastronomy.

The Constellations Become the Zodiac

Across cultures, ancient observers saw creatures and objects in the constellations, and soon stories of mythic importance were told and passed down against this starry backdrop. The movement of the stars and planets had great symbolic significance. In China, with perhaps the oldest astrological system, a planetary conjunction might provoke the rise or fall of ruling dynasties. And in Mesopotamia (present day Iraq) centered around Babylon, the Sumerian astrologer-priests interpreted celestial events as a divine message from the Gods to the earthly kings.

Arab and Egyptian Beginnings

Though it likely began at the beginning of time itself, findings such as clay tablets with astrological symbols unearthed at the site of ancient Babylon date to about 3000 B.C.. A people known as the Chaldeans are thought to have spread a highly developed astrological system throughout the Middle East and Egypt. Some believe Mesopotamia is the birthplace of astrology, but Egypt was cited by the Greeks as an important source, as well.

The Greeks Discover Arab Astrology

The Greeks, led by Alexander the Great, conquered parts of Mesopotamia in 334 B.C. and absorbed its rich astral lore. The Greeks embraced this astrological wisdom and developed it further with schools across the Hellenic world created for its study, the most famous in Alexandria, in Egypt. The word “Zodiac” comes from a combination of Greek words meaning “circle of animals.”

Horoscopes for Everyone

In the Greek world, the Sun signs became part of common knowledge and soon the wider public became interested. Greek astrologers added the time of birth, creating a more nuanced personal portrait that combined both the Sun and Rising signs. Before mostly the concern of the ruling elite, now the individual could study their own horoscope and ponder what fate the stars foretold.

The Greek Influence Spreads

The Greek astrological system spread as far as India, where the Zodiac and many Greek terms were adopted. But this only added to an already deeply rooted astrological tradition, which included holding Hindu rites to coincide with spring and autumn equinoxes.

Because astrology is the art of finding cosmic meaning in the patterns of stars and planets, it’s been called the oldest science. And for millennia, the study of astrology and astronomy were interwoven into one discipline. In China, astrology enjoys an unbroken lineage, since it never fell into disrepute, as it did during the age of Enlightenment in the West. Today many are taking another look at the wisdom of these earliest cultures and rediscovering that link we all have to the sky above.

Rulership

The planetary ruler of your Sun sign is important, and its myths and attributes tell you a lot about your own nature. For example, if your Sun is Sagittarius, your planetary ruler is Jupiter. You radiate in an expansive, faithful way, just as Jupiter acts as a cosmic guide to life's lucky breaks. And the house in which your Sun sign falls, is the life area in which you expand. The planetary ruler of your Sun's house position is like the host, who directs that Jupiter-ruled quest toward a particular life theme or lesson.

Each planet is a symbolic ruler of one (or two) Zodiac signs, and this helps you understand another dimension of that sign. The planetary ruler goes along with the sign and house, when you're trying to intuit the essence of a planet's position in your chart. These associations were grandly thought out during astrology's hay day in Greece, and came from observations of human behavior.

Once you know astrology, the links are clearer. Each planets has its own attributes, and are even dropped into daily language – mercurial, venusian, jovial, saturnine, etc. The pairings were originally made with just the planets in view, with Saturn at the outer edge. When new planets were discovered, astrologers altered these rulerships, based on what was observed. A new addition has been Chiron, a comet discovered in 1977, that's since been linked to Virgo, though most still list Mercury as the ruler.

There's a planetary ruler of both signs and houses, and this kind of intuitive synthesis is a key to “getting” astrology. Planets in their own signs, like Moon in Cancer, are said to be dignified, and that's a placement of strength. And yet, that Cancer Moon may sit in the Second House, the natural house of Taurus, ruled by Venus. This tells us that the Cancer Moon will seek to nurture via the senses, and likely be a great gourmand!

The Planets

In astrology's symbolic language, the planets represent different areas of life experience. The planets' own expression will be colored by its Zodiac sign and house position. In a birth chart, the planets are frozen in time -- 'under the influence' of signs, and in a particular house -- a synthesis of these is needed to understanding its role. But on their own, they are the major celestial bodies, each one full of mythic importance. It's important to first understand the planets and the dimension of life experience they represent.

The Sun: The Sun is a luminary. The Spirit. The ever present core Self that acts as a vehicle for achieving the life mission. The Sun is the true Self radiating from the core. The Sun's energy is the center around which the personality is built.

The Moon: The Moon is a luminary. The Soul that holds the Spirit. The instinctive emotional self that is the ground of a person's being. The soul's legacy of home and Mother, and the desire to create that safe place in the world. The energy that self-soothes.

Mercury: Your perceptive filter. The unique way impressions are absorbed, and what your mind alights on. The preoccupations of your life through the mind. A messenger between the soul and the material world.

Venus: How you find beauty in life, and share it with others. What qualities are you drawn to in friends and lovers? What kind of art, music and creative self-expression is nourishing to your soul.

Mars: Your sexual energy, and the thrust of action. The expression of survival instincts, agression, anger and vitality. What stirs you up to act, your passions, drive and the courage to push out into new experiences.

Jupiter: The call to grow, seek adventure, follow the path to your destiny. The cosmic champion of your dreams. Activities that broaden your horizons, fill you with faith and make you feel supported by the Universe.

Saturn: The ability to create structures that serve our highest potential. Reminds us of limitations, so that boundaries and timelines can take shape. An area where maturity is hard-won, and only comes through sustained effort , discipline and a good use of resources.

Uranus: The provocateur that brings sudden changes, and restless need for freedom. The expression of the authentic self, free from restrictions.

Neptune: The spiritual searcher that sees the truth beyond structures, time and illusions. The imaginative realm of dreams, fantasy and illusions, as part of the infinite landscape of the soul (and universe). How you find a higher meaning or personal creativity through that spiritual source.

The Puzzle Pieces

The pieces of the chart:

A natal chart is like a puzzle, much as a human! There are various components that have meaning and those parts fit together with other parts to create a full picture. While it is true that the sum of a whole human spirit is not equal to its personality parts, we can understand the basic human issues we all deal with and break them down into rough categories. Every astrology chart is composed of the same 4 basic pieces: Planets, Signs, Houses, and Aspects. Let’s take a look at understanding each piece as it applies to a birth chart:

What do the planets mean?

The planets are symbols representing basic human needs and urges that we all have. For instance, we all have a need to feel safe and loved. That need we all share is represented by the symbol of the Moon. We all share a need to learn and communicate, which is represented by the symbol of Mercury. There are 10 common planets that astrologers work with: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto (yes, most of us still call Pluto a planet!)* Many astrologers include other heavenly bodies, such as some asteroids. We will go more deeply into the planets (and introduce a couple of new components) later in this article.

Twelve pieces of sky:

The signs divided the sky into 12 equal parts and each section of sky has its own meaning. The signs give us the spectrum of the whats, hows and whys. So, if Mercury is how we learn and communicate, then the sign Mercury is in (the section of sky Mercury was in when we were born) would tell us how we like to communicate, what we like to talk about and learn about most, and why we are curious about some things and not others.

For instance, if Mercury is in the sign of Sagittarius, then that person is learning to communicate in a very direct and spontaneous way, and has a hunger to learn about a variety of topics, especially different cultures. By contrast, if Mercury is in the sign of Virgo, then that person is learning to communicate in a very detailed and purposeful way, to get right to the point and make sense of what they observe. They may be most interested in learning about things of a practical and immediately useful nature such as how things work like mechanical objects. There are 12 signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.

The twelves spheres (houses):

The houses are divisions of the basic arenas of life, such as work life, home and family life, relationships, spirituality, etc. They are the stage where we act out our needs and engage with the world. For instance, if Mercury is representative of our learning and communication needs and it is found in our 10th house of career, we may find that we enjoy using our minds and our ability to communicate as the purpose of our work – anything from teaching to public speaking to writing. By contrast, if Mercury were in the 5th house of creativity, we may find that we enjoy communicating for pleasure and self-expression, such as writing novels, poetry, or lyrics.

There are 12 houses, typically named but not limited to: the House of Self (1st), the House of Resources (2nd), the House of Communication and Perception (3rd house), the House of Home and Family (4th), the House of Creativity, Play, and Self-Expression (5th), the House of Work and Health (6th), the House of Relationships (7th), the House of the Inner Psyche and Transformation (8th), the House of Travel, Education, and Religion (9th), the House of Career (10th), the House of Peers and Affiliations (sometimes called Friends, Hopes, and Wishes) (11th), and the House of Spiritual and Transcendent Life (12th).

Planetary dynamics (aspects):

The aspects are the relationships between the planets. The pattern that is created from the way the planets land in a chart sometimes leads to a special relationship between two or more planets. The most common aspect is called the Conjunction and that happens when two or more planets are very close together and can be said they are practically in the same spot. The Opposition is another aspect that happens when two or more planets are in the opposite place as each other. The Conjunction represents a fusion of the two planets, where the two behave as one, uniting and strengthening each other. The Opposition represents tension and push-pull dynamics between the two planets, represented by internal struggle.

For instance, if Mercury, the planet that represents our learning and communication needs, is in Conjunction with the Moon which represents our emotional needs, then it could be said that this person communications by drawing from their current emotional state and their feelings, not just their intellectual opinions, and that they may learn best by making an emotional or subjective connection with data, not just memorizing facts and figures. However, by contrast, if Mercury and the Moon are in Opposition to each other, this can indicate an internal struggle between heart and head, and perhaps a need for the person to work harder to communicate what they feel accurately and effectively. All aspects have advantages and disadvantages. The number of aspects is too numerous to list comprehensively, but the most common aspects are: the Conjunction, the Opposition, the Square, the Trine, and the Sextile.
