Chakras and Sun Signs in Vedic Astrology

Chakras and Sun Signs in Vedic Astrology

Each of the 12 astrology signs has a connection to one of the chakras. Learning about them and contemplating their meaning can be a great source of spiritual growth for you. The Vedic sciences, which originated thousands of years ago in the land now known as India, work seamlessly with one another because they are based around the same five elements. These five elements are expressed through the chakras, or the deepest energy centers of our minds. Each planet rules one of the chakras, which are based on our birth chart and connect our eternal souls to our worldly lives. As the planets move through the sky and affect each other, they also vibrate our chakras.

According to Vedic astrology, the planets imprinted your chakras with your soul's energy at the end of your previous lifetime. At the moment the planets lined up to offer the main lessons you are meant to learn in this life, you were born. These lessons constitute what is known in Indian philosophy as "karma."

Chakras and Yoga

Our chakras also demonstrate the connection between Vedic astrology and Yoga. Each chakra is related to an element, color, deity, sound, organ in the body, and several other components -- including two astrology signs.

For example, the Anahata (heart) chakra is ruled by Venus. When you experience love for another person, the energy of this heart chakra manifests as you feel expansion in your chest. Its sound is "Yam" (pronounced "yum"), its astrology signs are Libra and Taurus, and its element is air.

The Anahata chakra is crucial to individuals whose chakras are related to prominent planets in Libra or Taurus. The need to enjoy life and unselfishly connect with others is particularly important to these people.

Librans express these traits in an active, social way, for Libra is a masculine and airy sign. They would like to take loved ones to an opera or symphony performance, and have great conversations with many people. Feminine and earthy

Taureans, meanwhile, express these traits differently by preferring to cook meals for loved ones and making them comfortable.

The Vedic sciences are based on the idea that we are spiritual beings placed on Earth to evolve toward our highest self and full potential. Vedic culture is rooted in the philosophy that human beings are spiritual and that all living things -- plants, animals, everything -- are in a constant process of evolution.

Vedic Astrology & Spirituality

Vedic Astrology & Spirituality

The truth of what is really happening in life, in the Eastern sense, is that you are a spiritual being. You come here to Earth, with a body and a psychology, in order to evolve toward your full spiritual awakening. This truth includes the concept of reincarnation. Past and future lifetimes are not sources of speculation in the Indian system and culture: they are assumed to be true.

In this way, the circumstances of your life now have been determined by your actions in past lifetimes, and in this one. How you handle these circumstances determines your future lifetimes. This process is called "the law of karma.” Vedic – or Indian -- astrology is the process of reading your soul's karma, and is deeply connected to spiritual practices. The term "Vedic" comes from "the Vedas" -- the oldest books known to man. They are the source of Indian spirituality and mysticism. The term "Veda", means "truth", not just regular truth (like 2+2=4, truth), but the truth of life.

The spiritual implications of this are vast. In a very literal sense, Vedic astrology is considered to be a “soul mapping”. In Vedic thinking, you are formed by the “seven rays of light” -- the visible planets and their energies. As your life on Earth is a journey toward spiritual perfection, you can better understand that journey through each of the seven principles -- the seven visible planets (and the two shadow planets: the Lunar nodes of Rahu and Ketu).

For example, the Sun is your level of confidence and your capacity to express yourself in a fulfilling and dignified way. When it is powerful, you do not over express yourself, nor do you avoid self-expression or responsibility due to a lack of confidence.

The Moon is in your capacity to be receptive to life, without protecting yourself from the things you are afraid to receive. When it is powerful, you do not cling too much, like a mother who will not let go of her children, nor do you avoid emotional involvement due to fear of loss.

Based on many subtle techniques, a Vedic astrologer unravels the delicate threads and experiences of this lifetime, framing them against the larger backdrop of your soul's eternal nature and the karmic lessons you are here to learn. At best, Vedic astrology offers a very objective look into your soul's evolution.

Once you realize that there is a divine plan, and remember the divine intelligence that is keeping everything moving forward, you’ll see the beauty of all life situations, even ones that don't feel good in the moment.

Vedic astrology is an amazing tool for helping you make life decisions that inspire happiness. But the true power of Vedic astrology is its ability to shed light on "why" you are in pain, what the deeper soul lesson is. In this way, rather than using astrology as another way to try to "get what you want", Vedic astrology is an incredibly powerful tool to help reveal who you really are, beyond all of the worldly desires and day-to-day distractions.

In the Eastern sense, the only reason you suffer is that you become tangled up in the world of the senses and forget who you are -- and what everything is: A play of divinity.

Vedic Medical Astrology

|

Medical Astrology is that branch of Astrology dealing with Health. The 12 Signs of the Zodiac are linked to the Twelve Limbs of the body. The Ascendant rules the Head and the 12th House, the Feet. The Law of Correspondences of Classical Philosophy has another term " The Doctrine of Signatures". This doctrine states that objects - animate and inanimate - are governed by planets and Classical Astrology has taken this concept beyond " The Law of Cause and Effect " and has defined it as Archetypal or Psychological.

Reflections of the intrinsic qualities of the planets can be seen in people, plants, animals & minerals. All that we see, touch, consume & harvest has a correspondence. By knowing our own planetary signature, we can consume those materials which correspond to our planetary signature and thus a healthy balance can be maintained. ( In my horoscope, Jupiter is posited in Cancer and hence powerful in positional as well as directional strength. If I am afflicted by any sort of disease, the escape route is the Jupiterian Way - viz consuming more vegetables and fruits, as he rules fruits and vegetables. If I do that, I will be implementing what the Great Seers said long ago " Naturopathic food is medicine and medicine is food " )!

Since the Zodiacal Signs represent the Five Elements ( Ether , Fire, Air, Earth & Water ), the ancient astrological savants assigned everything in the Universe to a planetary ruler, and considered all as the manifestation of the Elemental Five and their respective qualities - hot and dry, cold and dry, hot and humid , cold and humid. Jupiter rules "Kapha" and the Sun "Pitta' ( the three humors of Ayurveda ). These elements were understood in a physical & metaphysical sense, as per the principle " As Above, So Below ". Many body constitutions are defined in Ayurveda. The Phlegmatic ( predominance of Kapha), the Bilious ( preponderance of Pitta ) & the Windy ( predominance of Vata ). There are 4 types of Body Constitution in Western Holistic Medicine - Sanguine, Phlegmatic, Choleric and Melancholic.

Ayurvedic Therapy

The Seven Planets correspond to the Three humours ( Doshas ) in Ayurveda. In the Ayurvedic Model, the Seven Revolving Heavens are classified thus ( Vatam Pittayutha Karothi Dinakrith)

Jupiter Kapha
Sun Pitta
Moon Vata & Kapha
Mars Pitta
Mercury Pitta, Vata & Kapha
Venus Vata & Kapha
Saturn Vata

The seven planets correspond to the Seven Gross Tissue- elements ( dhatus) thus

Jupiter Fat
Saturn Veins
Mars Bone Marrow
Sun Bones
Moon Blood
Mercury Skin
Venus Seminal Energy

By analysing the horoscope, the astrologer can discern the badly placed planet and the corresponding Dhatu which has caused the problem and can prescribe Ayurvedic remedial measures ( " Dushthithasyadi Dhatustho Rogeenam Roga Eeryatham " ) Medical Astrology's perspective about the 12 Houses of the Zodiac

House Organ
Ist House Head
2nd House Face
Third House Throat
Fourth House Heart
Fifth House Place beneath the heart
Sixth House Stomach
Seventh House Generative Organ
Eighth House Upper Thigh
Ninth House Thigh
Tenth House Knee
Eleventh House Calf
Twelfth House Feet

If the 6 H is afflicted, there can be digestive tract disorders. Natural malefics in the 6 H may create hyperacidity and gas trouble. Affliction either to the 7th house means disorders of the digestive tract, hyperacidity and gas trouble ( Papa Saptamagah Tadodara Ruja ). The same holds good for the 6 H ( Papa Shashtagatha Tadodararuja ). If the 6 H or the 7 H is afflicted, one should be very careful about the body's acidity level. The body's PH value should be kept at 7. Anything less than 7 is dangerous. The 80% alkaline nature of the body should be kept up & acidity should not be above 20%. The best foods to be taken are Vedic Foods, which are low acidity, low cholesterol diet. The Acidity- Alkalinity ratio should be kept at 80% -20%. That ratio can be maintained if you consume 100 grams fruits and 300 grams vegetables daily and avoid non-natural food. Natural foods are alkaline and non-veg basically acidic. From experience, it can be discerned that not only malefic planets bring in problems from enemies, but also problems to the stomach ( Pape Shashtopagathe Vrina Bhayaschora Satru Peeda Cha ).
If the 12 H is afflicted by malefic planets, there can be affliction to the feet. We have seen many a patient suffering from 12 H affliction and which manifests as problems on the feet.

Similarly, 4 H affliction means trouble to the Heart. I knew one patient with heart problem who had the North Node in the Fourth. He had a heart surgery. The North Node in the Heart region in the horoscope had effectuated this problem.

There are some astrologers who take this from the Horoscope of the Cosmic Man, that is from His Ascendant Aries. This method also yields results but from our experience, we follow the dictum of Natal Astrology that it is the Ascendant of the native which is the head and the Descendant the stomach region. I know many an astrologer who follow this from Aries Asc & if a malefic is posited in Virgo, in the 6 H of the Kalapurusha ( Cosmic Man ), he predicts stomach problems for the native. ( Kalanarasya Avayavath Purushanam Kalpayeth ). Or if a malefic is posited in Taurus, he predicts wounds on the face for the native.

Affliction to any house indicates affliction to the corresponding part of the body. North Node - or any other malefic - in the Sixth is indicative of stomach trouble & ulceration. Fourth house affliction means that the heart is afflicted and first house affliction means that the head is afflicted. ( Pape Lagnagathe Parajaya Bhaya Siroruja )

The planets correspond to the different systems of Man thus

Sun The Bone System
Moon The Circulatory System
Mars The Muscular System
Mercury The Veins
Venus The Reproductive System
Jupiter The Digestive System
Saturn The Excretory System

From experience, Vedic Medical Astrology is found to be very accurate. In my father's horoscope, he had a specific yoga for Arthritis with Jupiter in Libra Asc and Saturn in Aries. My mother has Saturn in the 12 H; she has a problem in the leg. My co-brother has Mars in the 12 H; he is suffering from some nerve problem on the feet. I personally have the North Node in the 6 H and I have hyperacidity and gas trouble ( Papa Shashtagatha Tadodararuja ) !

Fee:
Membership of BAVA is included in the course fee of £195 per term of ten lessons.
Venue: Room 3, Hinde St. Methodist Church, corner Hinde Street and Marylebone High St, London W1. (Underground Bond Street)
Time: 7-9pm for 10 Thursday evenings. Please use the entrance in Marylebone High Street.

The beginner’s course has three modules and each module runs for ten weeks. This course lasts one year. The correspondence course runs concurrently with the BAVA evening classes, so that students are able to study from home or with the classes and to change between the two of them at any convenient time. Membership of BAVA is included in the course fee of £195 per term of ten lessons. This also includes astrology programme, ephemeris and other course materials. The 1st term includes all of the basic elements of Jyotish.

The course covers all aspects of this vast ancient science including its spiritual and philosophical basis and will take you to basic competence. A second year's study is available for those who wish to study for professional examinations. For those who have already studied Vedic Astrology for some time it is possible to join one of the more advanced classes.

No prior knowledge of astrology is required for the beginner’s course. Those with experience of modern Western astrology are also welcome and will find this knowledge of value in deepening their understanding of astrology.

There are a small number of recommended books for the course. These will be available on mail-order from the UK if they are not available locally. Advice on books to study is available any time from Gordon Brennan. Students will also be given an Ephemeris and shown how to use it. There is also a free astrology programme available with the course.

The basic course is divided into three modules, one per term of ten weeks. The course syllabus will cover all of the basics of Vedic Astrology in the first two terms. This will include an introduction to Indian Mythology and Philosophy as well as an explanation of the main Sanskrit terms used and basic astronomy. The third term of ten weeks concentrates on the ability to read charts and gradually less on acquiring new techniques.

Vedic Astrology is a very large subject and the student needs to become familiar with its terms in order to make good progress. There may seem to be quite a lot to learn initially, but as long as the principles are understood this will not be difficult.

The fees for the beginner’s course are £195 per term of ten weeks. 20% discount is given to full time students. Payment by credit card is accepted. Phone Gordon Brennan on 01702-582576.

BAVA courses are structured to lead to recognised qualifications in Vedic Astrology. The next BAVA examinations will be available at the same time as the April 2009 BAVA Conference.

Vedic Astrology Signs or Rashis

|

The Zodiac According to Indian Tradition

Signs are called "Rashis" (raw-shees) in Sanskrit. This table shows the signs with their rulers, Sanskrit names and symbols, etc. As you can see, the signs are the same as used in Western astrology. However, the nature of the signs, what they do, and the demigods behind them, who control them, are vastly different in Vedic astrology.

Vedic Zodiacal Signs
Sign Sanskrit Name Type Sex Mobility Lord
Aries Mesha Ram Fire
M
Movable Mars
Taurus Vrishaba Bull Earth
F
Fixed Venus
Gemini Mithuna Couple Air
M
Common Mercury
Cancer Karkata Crab Water

Leo Simha Lion Fire

Sagittarius Dhanus Bow Fire

Capricorn Makara Alligator Earth

Aquarius Kumbha Pot Air

Pisces Meena Fishes Water
F

Note: Vedic astrology differs from Western or Tropical astrology mainly in that it uses the fixed zodiac as opposed to the moving zodiac. Most people's "Sun Sign", that which you can get from the newspaper each day, is usually one sign back when the chart is refigured using Vedic astrology. So, the first surprise using the Vedic system is that you are no longer the Sun Sign you always thought you were. However, if you were born in the last 5 days or so of the Western sign month, then you will probably still be the same sign in the Vedic system.
